The End Is Not the End: What Bible Prophecy Reveals About How We Should Live Today
There is something about studying the end of all things that has a way of clarifying the present. When you trace the arc of biblical prophecy from Daniel through Revelation, a picture emerges that is not meant to terrify but to transform. It is meant to shake us loose from comfortable, half-hearted living and awaken us to the urgency of the moment we are in.
So let us take that journey together.
A Story Thousands of Years in the Making
The book of Daniel is one of the most remarkable prophetic documents ever written. Centuries before events unfolded, Daniel recorded visions of empires rising and falling, of a coming world ruler, of a period of unparalleled tribulation, and ultimately of God's sovereign victory over all of it. What was sealed prophecy in Daniel's day has become, in large part, documented history. And what remains unfulfilled is coming into focus with stunning clarity.
Daniel chapter 9 describes a period of prophetic time that accounts for the rejection and death of the Messiah, the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., and a final seven-year period still to come. In the middle of that final week, a coming ruler will break a peace covenant with Israel, desecrate a rebuilt temple, and declare himself to be God. Daniel chapter 11 traces the rise and fall of empires, foreshadowing a figure history knows as Antiochus Epiphanes, who desecrated the Jewish temple in 167 B.C. by sacrificing a pig on the altar. That act of horror was itself a preview, a foreshadowing of what a future world leader will do on a far greater scale.
The Coming World Ruler
Revelation chapter 13 expands on what Daniel began. A world leader rises from the nations, empowered not by his own genius but by Satan himself. He is a man of extraordinary charisma and deception. He speaks peace but brings devastation. He will suffer what appears to be a fatal wound and will appear to recover, staging a counterfeit resurrection that will convince a watching world to worship him. He will be joined by a second figure, a false prophet, who uses signs and wonders to enforce global devotion, demanding that every person receive a mark in order to buy or sell anything.
The technology for this is not science fiction. It is already here.
In Matthew chapter 24, Jesus himself warned that in those days false messiahs and false prophets would arise and perform such convincing signs that even the most discerning would nearly be deceived. His instruction was clear: do not be fooled by signs in secret places or claims made in hidden corners. When the true Son of Man returns, it will be unmistakable, like lightning that flashes from the east and lights up the sky all the way to the west. Every eye will see it. There will be no room for doubt.
Signs of the Times
Daniel chapter 12 includes two details that read like a description of our current moment. The angel tells Daniel that in the time of the end, many will travel rapidly to and fro, and knowledge will increase. Both of those realities now define daily life. We board planes that carry us across continents in hours. We hold devices in our hands that give us access to virtually all of human knowledge in seconds. We are living inside the conditions that biblical prophecy described thousands of years ago.
The Gap Between the Tribulation and the Kingdom
After the seven-year tribulation ends, Scripture does not move immediately into the millennial reign of Christ. Daniel chapter 12 references 1,290 days rather than the expected 1,260, suggesting an additional 30-day period. Further still, verse 12 references 1,335 days, adding another 45 days beyond that. Many scholars understand this as a period of purification and preparation before Christ formally establishes his kingdom on earth, a 75-day transition between the end of the tribulation and the beginning of his thousand-year reign. The detail matters because it reflects the meticulous, sovereign planning of a God who has ordered every moment of history with precision.
What This Means for Us Right Now
Here is where prophecy becomes personal.
Knowing that a day of unimaginable tribulation is coming, knowing that the technology for global control is already in place, knowing that the geopolitical conditions described in Scripture are aligning before our eyes, what should we do with that knowledge?
The answer is not to build bunkers or hoard supplies. The answer is to live with urgency and boldness for the gospel.
Scripture is clear that those who belong to Christ will not endure the day of wrath. The church, referenced repeatedly in the early chapters of Revelation, disappears entirely from the narrative in chapter 4 and does not reappear until chapter 19. The people of God are removed before the tribulation begins. But that is not a reason for passivity. It is a reason for passion.
Consider the people around you who have never heard a clear presentation of the gospel. Consider the neighbors, coworkers, and family members who are, at this very moment, moving toward an eternity without Christ. The 144,000 Jewish witnesses described in Revelation will preach during the tribulation, and souls will still be saved. But those who have heard the gospel and repeatedly rejected it may find themselves unable to respond when the moment of decision finally arrives. The Bible warns that God will send a strong delusion upon those who refused the truth, so that they believe the lie instead.
Today is the day of salvation. Not tomorrow. Today.
A Heaven Worth Telling People About
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:18 that the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are unseen are eternal. That perspective changes everything. Those who have caught even a glimpse of eternity, whether through near-death experience, through the peace that passes understanding, or through the testimony of those who passed from this life into the next with joy on their faces, come back changed. They cannot stop talking about it.
That is how we should all be living. Not paralyzed by prophecy, but propelled by it. Knowing what is coming should make us bolder, more generous, more urgent, and more filled with hope than anything else in this world could produce.
The end, for the believer, is not the end at all. It is the beginning of everything.
