"When Bad Things Happen, Where Is God?"
When the Storm Is Coming: A Call for the Church to Wake Up
There is a moment in every generation when the signs become impossible to ignore. The world groans under the weight of its own brokenness. Earthquakes increase. Wars multiply. Moral confusion spreads like a fog across the landscape of a civilization that once knew better. And yet, somehow, the people who carry the only answer seem to be the quietest ones in the room.
That is the tension worth sitting with today.
A Broken World Was Never God's Plan
Scripture is honest about the condition of the world. Romans 8:22 describes all of creation groaning and straining together under the weight of corruption. The earth itself is wearing out, moving from order toward chaos, just as the psalmist described in Psalm 102 when he wrote that the heavens and earth would wear out like an old garment. This is not a poetic exaggeration. It is a theological reality.
When God finished His work of creation in Genesis 1, He looked at everything He had made and called it good. There was no death, no pain, no sorrow. The world was whole. But when sin entered through the choices of the first man and woman, everything changed. God cursed the ground. Pain entered childbirth. Death entered life. And according to Romans 6:23, the wages of sin is death, not just physical death, but the kind of spiritual unraveling that touches everything.
Here is what that means for us today: the chaos we see in the world is not evidence that God has abandoned us. It is evidence of what sin costs. The earthquakes, the moral confusion, the cultural decay, these are the wages being paid out on a debt humanity has been running up for a very long time. The world is reaping what it has sown.
And God is exactly where He has always been. We are the ones who moved.
The Gates of Hell and What They Actually Mean
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus makes a staggering promise. He tells Peter that He will build His church, and that the gates of hell will not prevail against it. That verse is often read as a defensive promise, as though the church is simply supposed to hold on and survive. But the image Jesus is drawing on is far more aggressive than that.
In the ancient world, the gates of a city were where power gathered. It was where the wisest leaders sat, where legal decisions were made, where commerce was conducted, where military strategy was formed. The gates represented the concentrated strength and intelligence of a community. When Jesus said the gates of hell would not prevail against His church, He was saying that even the most sophisticated, powerful, and organized forces of darkness cannot withstand the church when it is truly alive and moving.
The early church understood this. Within three centuries, they had carried the gospel across the known world. They won converts in Caesar's own household. They turned the world upside down, as Acts 17:6 describes, without social media, without denominational infrastructure, without any of the resources we take for granted. They had the same God, the same power, and the same commission we have today.
So the honest question worth asking is this: why are we backing up?
The Danger of Not Knowing You Are Blind
One of the most sobering forms of blindness is the kind where the person afflicted does not know they cannot see. Colorblindness, for example, often goes undetected until a doctor identifies it. A person can walk through life interpreting colors incorrectly, never realizing the world looks different to everyone else around them.
A similar spiritual blindness has settled over much of the church in America. The storm that the writers of the New Testament warned about, the apostasy, the falling away, the increasing lawlessness, is not approaching from the distant horizon anymore. It is already making landfall. And yet the prayer meetings are sparse. The urgency is missing. The altars are quiet.
There is a story about a man named Peace, a condemned criminal in 19th century England, being led to the gallows by a clergyman who was reading Scripture to him. Peace turned to the minister and said something that should stop every believer cold. He said that if he believed what the minister claimed to believe about hell, he would crawl on his hands and knees across broken glass to warn every person he could find. But he saw no tears in the minister's eyes, so he concluded the man did not truly believe what he was saying.
That indictment has not aged a day.
Hell Is Real and So Is the Answer
Jesus spoke about hell more than any other single subject in the Gospels. It is not a metaphor. It is not a scare tactic invented by fearful men. It is a reality that Jesus Himself described in detail and took seriously enough to go to the cross to save people from. Every person ever created will live forever, in one of two places. There is no neutral ground, no second chance, no exception for those who simply never decided.
If the church truly believed this, the altars would overflow. Lives would be reorganized around the mission. Prayer would not be an afterthought. Neighbors, coworkers, family members, strangers in airports and on highways, they would all be seen differently, not as inconveniences but as eternal souls headed somewhere permanent.
What You Can Do Starting Now
The answer is not complicated, even if it is costly. Write down the names of the people in your life who do not know Christ. Pray for them by name, consistently and persistently. Walk through your community and pray over it. Pray over schools, police stations, prisons, neighborhoods. When opportunities arise to speak, speak. When people pull back, stop pushing and keep praying. Stay ready.
Jesus said in John 14:6 that He is the way, the truth, and the life. Not one of several options. Not a helpful philosophy. The way. The only way. And in Acts 1:8, He promised that when the Holy Spirit comes upon His people, they will be witnesses, starting at home and extending to the ends of the earth.
The storm is visible on the horizon. The question is not whether it is coming. The question is what the church will do before it arrives.
